Tension has risen in Jobele community in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State following the alleged release of a suspect earlier apprehended by residents over alleged involvement in criminal activities.

The community has recently witnessed a surge in kidnapping incidents, with residents claiming that no fewer than seven abduction-related cases have been recorded in the area in recent times.

The situation reportedly escalated between Saturday night and Sunday morning when suspected kidnappers attacked a victim, leaving the individual severely injured. The victim was initially rushed to the General Hospital and later referred to Ogbomoso for further medical treatment.

In response to the growing insecurity, residents of Jobele organized a community vigil on Sunday night into Monday morning to safeguard their neighbourhood.
During the vigil, at about 1:00 a.m., members of the community reportedly apprehended a suspicious individual allegedly found in possession of a gun, a cutlass and other dangerous weapons. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the police at the Jobele Police Station for investigation.
However, the development took a dramatic turn on Monday morning when residents who visited the police station to follow up on the case reportedly discovered that the suspect had been released without any explanation.
The alleged release sparked outrage among members of the community, who questioned the circumstances surrounding the decision.
In protest, residents — including students — reportedly blocked the Old Oyo–Ibadan Road, a major highway linking Ibadan, Oyo and Ogbomoso, demanding an explanation from authorities over the suspect’s release.
Community members say the situation has heightened concerns about the safety of lives and property in Jobele and surrounding communities.
They are calling on the Nigeria Police Force, the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Government to urgently investigate the matter and take decisive steps to address the rising insecurity in Afijio Local Government Area.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
