A remarkable act of philanthropy by a United Kingdom-based researcher ,Ms. Garlina Gardiner, has given a new lease of life to the tennis court at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
The renovated court was officially unveiled on Tuesday during a ceremony attended by principal officers of the university, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, members of the Sports Council, and stakeholders in sports development.

Determined to make a difference, Gardiner sold her personal artworks to raise an initial £7,000 towards the project. Additional donations later increased the fundraising total to more than £11,000, helping to fund a renovation effort valued at over ₦15 million.
Within three months, the once-neglected facility was transformed into a modern sporting arena, providing students, staff, and sports enthusiasts with a revitalised environment for training and competition.

Speaking during the unveiling, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bamire described the project as a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals choose to contribute meaningfully to institutional development.
“We have had gaps here for years. It takes the grace of God and committed individuals to get things done. Some people made efforts in the past, but today we are celebrating a successful outcome,” he said.
While commending Gardiner’s intervention, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that the bigger challenge lies in maintaining facilities after they have been built or renovated.
According to him, universities and sporting institutions must move beyond commissioning projects and focus on sustainability, regular maintenance, and effective utilisation of available infrastructure.
“We should continue to leverage our networks to support the system. We need assistance to upgrade and maintain our sports facilities,” Bamire stated.
He further emphasized the need to explore innovative ways of generating revenue from sporting infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability.
“Beyond that, we must think about sustainability. How do we attract users? How do we generate revenue from these facilities? That is the future we must build,” he added.
The commissioning ceremony featured an exhibition tennis match on the newly refurbished court, giving attendees an opportunity to witness the quality of the renovation firsthand.
Guests were also taken on a tour of key sporting facilities within the university, including the football field and swimming pool, as part of efforts to showcase ongoing improvements across the institution’s sports infrastructure.
Among dignitaries present were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Akinfala; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Aderonmu; Chairman of the Sports Council, Professor Oyelade; and other principal officers of the university.
For many observers, the project represents more than the renovation of a tennis court. It serves as a powerful reminder that individual commitment, strategic partnerships, and a strong maintenance culture remain critical to the growth and sustainability of sports development in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
