The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has entered a new phase of reorganization and strategic repositioning with the election of Kabiru Turaki (SAN) as its National Chairman. The former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs assumed the role following a decisive selection process at the party’s national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The convention, which drew more than 3,000 delegates from across Nigeria, served as a major gathering aimed at rebuilding trust and strengthening the party’s internal structure ahead of the 2027 general elections. Delegates from 17 states cast their ballots, reaffirming the party’s commitment to participatory decision-making.
Turaki clinched the chairmanship after securing 1,516 votes, a wide margin over Senator Yakubu Lado, who garnered 275 votes before eventually stepping down, effectively making Turaki the preferred consensus option.

In a further boost to the party’s administrative framework, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja emerged as the National Secretary. Their emergence is seen by observers as a deliberate effort to blend experience with renewed energy within the PDP hierarchy.
The electoral proceedings were overseen by Senator Ben Obi, whose coordination ensured a transparent, peaceful, and credible process—an outcome the party hopes will restore confidence among members and supporters nationwide.
With Turaki at the helm, party stakeholders anticipate a renewed push for unity, strategic planning, and reconciliation as the PDP seeks to regain national prominence and reposition itself as a formidable contender in Nigeria’s political landscape.
