In a dramatic showdown in Rabat on Sunday night, DR Congo extinguished Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup dream, edging the Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties after a tense 1–1 draw.
The match, played at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium, saw Nigeria take an early lead in the third minute of the encounter when Frank Onyeka strucked his shot , deflecting in off Axel Tuanzebe to wrong-foot the keeper.
DR Congo responded in the 32nd minute through Meschack Elia, capitalising on a turnover deep in midfield to slot home past Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria’s goal poacher, Victor Osimhen was forced off at halftime due to injury.
Neither side broke the deadlock in the second half nor extra-time, despite a number of nervy moments.
The fate of the game was eventually decided from the penalty spot. Earlier, DR Congo brought on goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu, who proved decisive by saving two penalties.
The victory earned DR Congo a slot in the inter-confederation playoff scheduled for March , 2026 , bringing the country closer to its World Cup appearance since 1974.
