Nigeria has taken a major step in strengthening its military capabilities with the acquisition of 24 Italian-made M-346FA fighter jets from Leonardo S.p.A., the largest single military aircraft purchase ever recorded in West Africa.
Valued at about €1.2 billion, the deal covers aircraft supply, long-term maintenance, and technical support, further cementing defence cooperation between Nigeria and Italy. The procurement is a central element of Nigeria’s ongoing effort to modernize the Nigerian Air Force and expand its operational effectiveness.
Earlier, the Federal Government approved a $618 million borrowing plan to finance the purchase of an initial batch of six M-346 attack jets and ammunition. Production of the first six aircraft is already underway in Italy, with three scheduled for delivery early 2026. Full delivery of the entire fleet is expected to be completed by mid-2026.

The acquisition comes amid Nigeria’s prolonged security challenges, including insurgency in the Northeast, banditry in the Northwest, and recurring communal violence in the Middle Belt. These threats have placed sustained pressure on national security resources and affected economic stability.
The M-346FA jets are expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s air combat, surveillance, and precision-strike capabilities, improving the military’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to internal security threats.
The development also aligns with Nigeria’s expanding regional security role. Recently, Nigerian forces intervened in a coup attempt in neighbouring Benin Republic, assisting in restoring constitutional order after mutinous soldiers briefly seized key locations in Cotonou. The operation, authorized by the Senate, highlighted Nigeria’s readiness to project force beyond its borders in support of regional stability.
Nigeria’s turn toward Italian defence suppliers reflects a broader shift in procurement strategy, aimed at diversifying away from traditional partners in the United States, Russia, and China. Italian defence firms are seen as offering modern, cost-effective platforms, along with technology transfer and dependable long-term support.

As the new aircraft are inducted into service, the acquisition is expected to play a decisive role in reshaping Nigeria’s internal security posture and reinforcing its position as a leading military power in West Africa.
