
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for deeper trade and economic cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom following the signing of a £747 million agreement to refurbish two major ports in Lagos.
The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, where both leaders emphasized the need to strengthen longstanding bilateral relations.

Speaking during the visit, President Tinubu noted that Nigeria is undergoing significant economic reforms and stressed the importance of expanding mutually beneficial partnerships. He acknowledged global economic pressures, stating that Nigeria, like many nations, is affected by current international challenges.

Tinubu described his maiden official trip to the UK as historic and pivotal for reinforcing diplomatic and economic ties.

Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, in his remarks, described the engagement as significant and reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to its enduring relationship with Nigeria. He praised the ongoing cooperation between both countries.
The UK leader also noted the importance of continued collaboration in addressing shared challenges while leveraging economic opportunities, particularly through infrastructure development such as the Lagos ports project.
The £747 million deal is expected to play a key role in modernizing Nigeria’s port operations.
