Nigeria’s quest for a spot at the next FIFA World Cup received a major boost on Friday as the Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 2–1 away victory over Lesotho in a tense qualifier at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
What many expected to be a straightforward contest turned into a true test of resilience and determination. The hosts were organized and spirited, forcing Nigeria to battle for every inch of the pitch in pursuit of the vital three points.
The first half was evenly matched and highly tactical. Nigeria enjoyed more of the ball but found it difficult to break down Lesotho’s tight defensive setup. The Southern Africans looked dangerous on the counter, ensuring that the visitors could not afford any lapse in concentration.
The deadlock was finally broken shortly after the interval when captain William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty to give Nigeria the lead. Substitute Akor Adams later doubled the advantage with a calm finish, appearing to seal the win for the Super Eagles.
Lesotho, however, refused to surrender and grabbed a late consolation goal, setting up a nervy closing spell. Despite mounting pressure, Nigeria’s defence held strong until the final whistle, clinching a crucial victory that reignites their qualification hopes.
