President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
The president took to his X handle to commend the team’s “superb performance,” which saw them secure their fifth consecutive continental title and their seventh overall.
In a message addressed to the team and shared on his official channels, President Tinubu wrote: “You did it, girls #DtigressNG
“Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall.
“Well done, Coach Rena and the team.”You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy.”
Meanwhile, Senegal lost to the South Sudan in the third place match by one point as the game ended 65-66.

Reacting to the game , Coach Otis Hughley Jr, expressed frustration over officiating, noting that African teams deserve a level playing field .
He called for unbiased officiating so that all teams will have equal opportunity while on the court .
He emphasized that African teams need to improve and earn global respect by focusing on how to play the game in the right way .
He explained that respect is earned through dedication and perseverance, and that African teams must be committed to excellence in order to succeed.
He highlighted the importance of honesty and truth in coaching and leadership and called for continued effort and dedication to enhancing the quality of play and coaching in African teams.
“This collective effort aims to promote integrity and excellence in sports, supporting African teams in their pursuit of global respect.”
