The Federal Government has unveiled a ₦10 billion housing initiative aimed at making home ownership more accessible for Nigerian civil servants, especially those in low- and middle-income brackets.
The announcement was made in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, during a joint briefing involving the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the National Pension Commission.

According to her, the scheme has already received presidential approval and will be implemented through the Federal Mortgage Bank and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board. The goal is to expand access to affordable housing finance and reduce the country’s housing deficit.

Officials explained that the programme is designed not just as a loan structure, but as a broader welfare push to improve workers’ stability and productivity. The idea is that home ownership can improve morale and long-term commitment within the civil service.

Alongside the housing scheme, the government also announced additional welfare adjustments for federal workers. These include enhanced retirement benefits for those under the contributory pension system, improved allowances, and full payment of duty tour allowances for approved training programmes, among other incentives.
The Federal Mortgage Bank described the initiative as part of a wider effort to expand mortgage access and provide flexible housing solutions such as home purchase, renovation support, and incremental building options. It also noted that rising construction costs and income pressures make such interventions necessary.
