Enugu Sports Commissioner Harps On Fair Play As Youth Games Kicks -Off
Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barrister Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu, has charged the 680 athletes from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state participating in the 1st edition of the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) sponsored U-15 Youth Games, to put up good performances and embrace fair play throughout the championship.
Speaking on Thursday at the opening ceremony of the games held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium , Barrister Ekweremadu, thanked the state Governor Dr. Peter Mbah, on the realization of the historic games.
He noted that the event has huge socio- economic impact on the state, especially, young people .
“I thank Governor Peter Mbah for making this event , which is historic possible, as it has a huge socio- economic impact on the state , especially on the teeming youths.
Ekweremadu noted that the competition was designed to enable the state select the best athletes for the National Youth Games to be hosted by Delta state from 10th – 20th of September, 2024.
The local government with the overall medals will win the sum of N1 million, while the second and third placed local governments will get N500, 000 and N300, 000 respectively, as other prizes will be given to the best winning athletes.
Meanwhile, the games began with the 4×100 metres relay heat races as well as a football match between Nkanu-East local government U-15 boys and Udenu local government team
The interesting match ended 3-2 in favour of Udenu U-15 team .
The games continue this Friday with other events.
