Fubara orders audit of local governments finances, appoints caretaker committees

Rivers State Governor , Siminalayi Fubara, has ordered an audit of local government finances in the state following the expiration of the immediate past chairmen of the councils.

He gave the directive shortly after the swearing -in of the newly appointed caretaker chairmen for the 23 local government areas of the state .

Delivering his address at the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Fubara urged the newly appointed caretaker chairmen to act as guardians rather than superheroes.

He charged them to safeguard the interests of their constituents and justify their appointment with good deeds .

He underscored that these developments are intrinsic to democratic principles, emphasizing that the resistance against tenure extension is not exclusive to Rivers State but has national implications

Governor Fubara clarified that the appointment of caretaker committees is a common practice across many states in the country , assuring that their tenure would not be prolonged excessively, as plans for local government elections would commence soon.

He stressed a non-violent approach to governance and urged the officials to promptly resolve the financial obligations of their predecessors, particularly concerning salaries and entitlements.
