
The Egbeda Local Government Traditional Council has condemned in totality the reckless use of firearms that led to the death of innocent student in Ibadan.
The victim was reportedly going for the West Africa Examination Council ( WAEC ) on Tuesday while the ugly incident occurred.
In a statement signed on Tuesday by the Acting Chairman of the Council and Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief ( Senator) Sharafadeen Alli , called on the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant authorities to launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the tragic incident.
The statement opined that the life of every citizen must be treated as sacred which must not be cut down in such a senseless and avoidable manner.
The statement also demanded that the officer in question must be identified and made to face the full wrath of the law .
The council urged security agencies to retrain and sensitize their personnel on the need to be more professional in the discharge of their duties .
The statement reads :
“The Egbeda Local Government Traditional Council has received with deep shock and sorrow the devastating news of the killing of a Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) student by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer during a wild chase of a traffic offender within our community today.
“This unfortunate incident is a tragic loss, not just to the bereaved family, but to our entire traditional council and the future of our society.
“No pursuit or operation should be worth the life of an innocent citizen.
“As a council, we condemn in strong terms the reckless use of firearms in civilian areas, particularly in school zones and residential communities.
“We call on the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant authorities to launch a thorough and transparent investigation into this tragic incident.
“The officer responsible must be identified and made to face the full wrath of the law.
“We also demand that appropriate compensation and support be provided to the bereaved family, whose pain and loss cannot be quantified.
“On behalf of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakunlehin and the entire Egbeda Local Government Traditional Council, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the school community.
“May the soul of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may such a tragedy never befall our land again “
