Norway pulled off one of the the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating five-time champions Brazil 2–1 in a dramatic Round of 16 encounter, with Erling Haaland scoring twice late in the match to send the Scandinavian nation into the quarter-finals.

Brazil entered the contest as favourites and were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 14th minute when they were awarded a penalty. However, Bruno Guimarães failed to convert from the spot, a miss that would ultimately prove costly. Despite controlling large portions of the first half and creating several chances, the South American giants were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval.
The match remained delicately poised until the closing stages when Norway’s talisman, Erling Haaland, broke the deadlock in the 79th minute after being set up by Andreas Schjelderup, stunning the Brazilian supporters and igniting celebrations among the Norwegian faithful.
Brazil responded by increasing the intensity of their attack and had earlier found the net through Endrick in the 58th minute following an assist from Matheus Cunha, keeping their hopes of progression alive.

However, as the five-time world champions pushed desperately for an equaliser, Norway struck the decisive blow in the 90th minute when Haaland completed his brace, once again capitalising on Schjelderup’s creativity.
Brazil were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time, which Neymar converted in the 90+10th minute, but the goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Norway held on to secure a famous victory.
The final whistle confirmed a historic 2–1 triumph for Norway and a stunning elimination for one of football’s most successful nations. Haaland’s match-winning performance and Norway’s disciplined display earned the Scandinavian side a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Mexico and England. For Brazil, meanwhile, the defeat represents one of the most shocking and painful exits in the country’s World Cup history.
