
President Bola Tinubu has honored the Immediate Past INEC Chairman, Prof . Mahmood Yakubu with the National Award of the Commander of the Order of the Niger ( CON).
The award according to the President was in recognition of his service to the nation while in office.
Yakubu, who was first appointed in November 2015 as the 14th chairman of the commission, served two consecutive five-year terms, with his reappointment coming in 2020. His tenure officially ended in accordance with the provisions of the law governing the commission.
In a statement released on Tuesday, President Tinubu expressed deep appreciation to Professor Yakubu for his dedication and contributions towards strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
The president commended him for conducting what he described as credible, free, and fair elections throughout his tenure.
The president also directed that May Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior National Commissioner, should assume office as Acting Chairman of INEC pending the appointment of a substantive replacement.
In a letter dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the nation as INEC chairman for a decade.
